Pedro Melo obtained his degree in Aquatic Sciences from the Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas de Abel Salazar (ICBAS), University of Porto, in 1995. He subsequently pursued postgraduate studies, earning a Master’s degree in Quality Control (Environment) from the Faculty of Pharmacy (FFUP), University of Porto, in 2000. In 2006, he was awarded a PhD in Human Biology by the Faculty of Medicine (FMUP), University of Porto. Currently,
Pedro Melo holds the position of Adjunct Professor at the Escola Superior de Saúde (E2S); Politécnico do Porto (PPORTO). His research interests center on exploring the impact of natural bioactive compounds and psychopharmacological agents on neural function, investigating the neurochemical mechanisms underlying visual processing, and monitoring physiological signals under extreme occupational conditions.
From 2007 to 2011, Pedro. Melo conducted postdoctoral research on neuronal aging at the Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology (IBMC), University of Porto. He also served as a postdoctoral fellow in the FCT-funded project “Cognition and Synaptic Function in Calcium Channel Disease” (PTDC/SAU-NEU/100701/2008), also based at IBMC.
In addition, Pedro Melo has experience in postgraduate teaching and supervision at both the Master’s and PhD levels. He has served on PhD evaluation committees and has contributed to academic publishing as the former editor of the European Journal of Clinical and Biomedical Sciences. He continues to act as an ad hoc reviewer for several international peer-reviewed journals and is actively involved in initiatives that promote the interface between science and society.
Since 2005, Pedro Melo has maintained a research and postgraduate education collaboration with the Unidad de Investigación Oftalmológica Santiago Grisólia and the Facultat de Medicina i Odontologia, Universitat de València, Spain.
