
Liliana Teixeira
Liliana da Conceição Teixeira is a qualified Occupational Therapist from Portugal, whose clinical career has been shaped by her extensive practice in London at the Royal Hospital for Neurodisability. During her time there, she worked across various units, gaining insights into the stages of recovery from brain injury. However, it was during her time in the Profound Brain Injury Unit that she developed specialised skills in the assessment and treatment of patients with Disorders of Consciousness.
A certified SMART assessor since 2006, she advanced her specialisation in 2012 by becoming a prolonged disorders of consciousness expert assessor, acquiring significant experience in medico-legal assessments.
She holds a PhD in Neurosciences from the Medicine School of the University of Porto and an MSc in Neuro-rehabilitation from Brunel University, London. Her academic journey led to an invitation to lecture in Portugal, where she now serves as an Associate Professor in Functional Sciences at the School of Health Sciences, Polytechnic of Porto.
Her research focuses on brain-injured patients with disorders of consciousness, combining clinical expertise and academic rigor to advance this critical field.
She is currently the leader of the treatment subgroup of the International Brain Injury Association, Disorders of Consciousness-Special Interest Group (IBIA DOC-SIG). In this role, she coordinates an international research team composed of leading investigators from around the world who are at the forefront of advancing knowledge and clinical practice in Disorders of Consciousness (PDOC). This group fosters innovation, harmonises best practices, and drives cutting-edge research aimed at improving outcomes for patients with severe brain injuries
