Catarina Mateus

Catarina Mateus is a professor and researcher in the fields of vision sciences and neurosciences. She holds a degree in Orthoptics from the Lisbon School of Health Technology (2006) and a PhD in Health Sciences from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra (2015), with the thesis “Pathophysiological Mechanisms and Novel Biomarkers in Acquired and Genetic Diseases of the Retinal Ganglion Cell”, under the supervision of the renowned Professor Miguel Castelo-Branco. She is currently an Associate Professor (Professor Coordenador) at the School of Health, Polytechnic Institute of Porto, where she coordinates the BSc degree in Orthoptics and leads the Orthoptics Department. Since 2024, she also serves as Vice-Coordinator of the MSc program in Translational Health, within the study track of Vision Sciences, Applied Neurosciences, and Neuromodulation. Additionally, Catarina is actively involved in research, serving as a senior researcher (integrated member) at the Center for Translational Health and Medical Biotechnology Research | Health Research Network (RISE-HEALTH@TBIO) and as a visiting researcher at the Coimbra Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Translational Research (CIBIT). She has contributed to several clinical trials focused on visual rehabilitation and the identification of biomarkers for early diagnosis, disease progression, and treatment response in neurodevelopmental and ophthalmological/neurophthalmological disorders. She is also developing expertise in scientific management by coordinating funded research projects, including COMPETE2030-FEDER-00929200 (€249,480.00), and COMPETE2030-FEDER-01469700 (€1,024,013.60).
