Leonardo Matias

Research Fellow

Leonardo Matias is a Research Fellow in the Metabonomics, Obesity & Related Disorders (MORD) group at TBIO. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry (2022) and a Master’s degree in Clinical Biochemistry (2024), both from the University of Aveiro. For his master thesis he worked in the field of immunology, at the Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (i3S), focusing on the characterization of a novel subset of iNKT cells in α-Gal KO mice (Fabry disease model). This work offered some insight into iNKT cell polarization, which can potentially enable future iNKT-based immunotherapies. At TBIO his fellowship combines the field of biochemistry in health with analytical chemistry, aiming to quantify compounds across several types of samples. Lately, his work was focused on evaluating the effect of unexplored compounds on the redox balance of cells. For that he used his background in biochemistry to optimize and validate HPLC methods. These studies aim to shed light on the antioxidant potential of previously unexplored compounds, potentially opening up new opportunities for disease treatment.
